A Welsh wedding with Scottish touches

I was asked to paint illustrations to be used on various elements of a wedding suite, including the invitations, RSVP cards, a map and the order of service. The brief was to intertwine leaks and daffodils (for the bride’s Welsh heritage and the location of the wedding at the bride’s family’s home in Wales) with thistles (for the groom’s Scottish roots).

For the invitation, I painted a floral border of thistles, leeks and daffodils, to which I added grapes and vines along the top as symbols of abundance, summer and the good things in life. We used a painting of the wedding venue here and on the map.

I also produced small icons or ‘spot’ illustrations of intertwined daffodils and thistles, and little wreaths of the same, which were used on any wedding stationery such as the RSVP cards and the order of service.

A nod to Hindu heritage

Ganesha

Ganesha is worshipped by Hindus as the remover of obstacles, and it is therefore traditional to ask for his blessing at the beginning of a wedding ceremony..

My brief was to replicate in illustration form an antique Batik print of Ganesha which had hung in the bride’s family home all her life. The illustration was added to the couple’s wedding suite as a nod to the bride’s Hindu heritage.

A laid-back London wedding

Full disclosure: this is the wedding suite for my own wedding… of course I was going to produce this one myself! I wanted something that combined classic simplicity with a relaxed feel, and with this in mind I (rather hastily) produced:

- a classic invitation with my own calligraphy,

- accompanied by a ‘Useful information’ sheet, the text flanked by portraits of my now-husband and I, with a lush border of green foliage and of blue and pink flowers;

- an illustrated map (on the back of the information sheet) to show the route from the church to the wedding venue, with illustrations of notable landmarks in the area and a pink and green-striped border, and

- a floral RSVP postcard, with a painting of the church on the address side.

All printed on a textured off-white card reminiscent of the watercolour paper I love in my practice.

A Yorkshire wedding with South African highlights (more details in summer 2021)

A full suite for a wedding taking place at Newby Hall Estate in Yorkshire in 2021. Working closely with the bride and groom to incorporate details of the beautiful wedding venue as well as floral references to their heritage, I am putting together:

- The wedding invitation, with my calligraphy and watercolour illustrations,

- An ‘additional information’ sheet, of printed text within a floral watercolour border,

- An illustrated map for the day, with my calligraphy and watercolour illustrations,

- An RSVP postcard, with my calligraphy and watercolour illustrations,

- The dinner menu in calligraphy,

- and additional illustrations to be used on the order of service, seating plan, place cards, etc.

More photographs to come.
