Celtic knotwork mortuary card and notecard
In Ireland, when someone passes away it is traditional for the family to offer a mortuary card (aka memorial card or remembrance card) with the name of the deceased, date of death and age, and a prayer, so that those who knew the deceased can remember that person in their prayers.
I painted a design of Celtic knotwork with detailed birds and fishes as a border, and laid out the text chosen by the family. I placed a painted lily in the centre of the top section of the border for the name of the deceased, Lily. This was flanked by mirrored peacocks whose design was derived from the 1p coin of former Irish currency (itself adapted from the Book of Kells).
To accompany the mortuary card, I was also asked to produce a matching notecard on which was printed a thank you message from the family, with space left for additional handwritten words.
For the reverse of both cards, I painted a ‘Cross of St Brigid’, which is a traditional Irish cross made by weaving together rushes.
Both cards were printed on simple matt white card.
