Ecstatic Dancers Lampshades
A wonderful commission of a pair of hand-painted lampshades. The brief was to use cheerful colours in order to keep a bright atmosphere in the room, and to come up with a design of dancers.
Inspired by Greek vases, Matisse cut-outs of female nudes, and contemporary dance, the Ecstatic Dancers were born!
Dimensions: diameter of 17” at the bottom, 14” at the top and are 12 1/2” tall.
As seen in The World of Interiors Magazine issue of September 2020.
Ecstatic Dancers Vase
The Ecstatic Dancers kept swirling about in my head, but it took another commission for them to leap out into the world. The client requested dancers on a decorative vase. We discussed various options of vases available for purchase in terms of size, shape, and colour. Very soon we both fell in love with this ochre yellow vase. Four joyful dancers now adorn its surface.
I loved the unbridled jubilant energy of the Ecstatic Dancers, and I wanted to create something exploring a different, more peaceful sort of joy. These Swimmers came to me and poured out onto a new series of lampshades, expressing the feeling of weightless freedom that comes from swimming underwater.
These lampshades have a diameter of 25cm at the bottom, 16cm at the top, and are 16.5cm tall.

Ancient Greek vases; the Three Graces interpreted by Botticelli and by Canova; the Cave of Swimmers in the Sahara, which featured in the film The English Patient; and of course, because he is the best, a lot of Matisse: his cut-out ‘Swimming Pool’, his cut-out dancers from the cover of Verve magazine, his painted Dance.
